Prologue

“Jake, wait. Stop,” her cries went unanswered as her boyfriend continued to tear frantically at her clothes, and force himself on her.

“Jake!” she gasped.

“Look, how many times do I have to tell you? You say you love me, and promise all these things, but in the end you’re nothing but a big tease,” Jake sat up. “You make me sick.”

“Jake, no, I’m sorry. It’s just...I’m sorry. I do love you, I do,” she leaned forward and kissed his cheek. “Please don’t be mad at me.”

Jake looked her over, as if trying to make up his mind.

She leaned back, deciding it was safer to just let him have his way with her than to argue and put up a fight.

At least he didn’t hit her this time.

She’d been with Jake since soccer season -the beginning of the year- her freshman year, his senior year. It had been the most perfect relationship for about three months, then Jake started to become irrational. He was possessive, controlling, and slowly became abusive. She knew in her heart she had to get away, but she felt she’d be safer with him. If he could hurt her while they were together, what would he do to her if she left?

She lay there and pretended to be enjoying herself as Jake worked her over. He was abnormally rough this time, and it hurt, so to ease the pain, she let her mind wander.

What she had been trying to tell him earlier was that her old pills were making her sick, so she had started a new prescription and wasn’t quite in the clear yet.

It only takes one time, and she just hoped this wasn’t it.
